1800 SHADE U is an Australian owned and run company that specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of Shade Sails. Shade sails are a versatile, cost effective and attractive alternative to carports, pergolas and just about any area you can think of.
We produce only the finest quality of work for all customers requiring shade solutions, including schools, playgrounds, public pools, cafés/restaurants, carparks, commercial premises, and residential houses.
Our company has been trading under various names in the textile industry for over 100 years.
Founded by A.E. Spicer who set up a tailor and mercer (textile trading) shop in Melbourne, it was passed through the family for half a century.
In recent decades Spicer Canvas Pty Ltd has moved with the times, growing and expanding to areas including Shade Sails.
Land was purchased in West Heidelberg for a new factory which was recently constructed allowing the company to scale up to manufacture and export quality Shade Sails in much larger quantities.
The company also purchased sophisticated equipment including high-frequency welding equipment and a Dingo mini-digger for onsite installation.
While other businesses in the industry operate as a “man in a van”, Spicer Canvas is capable of building and installing large and complex shade and tensile structures.
The business currently trades under the banner of 1800 Shade U, and we plan to be around for at least another 100 years.
We care for the environment at 1800 Shade U, and are committed to minimising our impact on the environment.
One of our core strengths is that we control all stages of the design, manufacturing, and installation process from start to finish, which enables us to carefully manage every part of the production process and ensure a minimal impact on the environment.
We follow best-practice waste management, and all our shade cloth offcuts and metal scraps are recycled.
Our steel, PVC and Polyethelene recycling program is helping to reduce landfill, meaning a healthier environment.
Shade and tensile structures also help the environment by helping to manage energy consumption in buildings. We have built structures through government funded programs such as the former "National Schools Solar Program".
1800 Shade U is committed to the safeguarding of its employees, contractors, client, other persons and property from accidental injury or damage from work carried out by and on behalf of the company.
Our company adopts health safety and welfare as a fundamental business objective. In meeting this commitment, the management takes all practicable steps to ensure they:
1800 Shade U owns and operates a state-of-the-art shade sail manufacturing facility in Melbourne, one of the largest of its kind. The construction of our manufacturing facility was a major project which was aimed at giving 1800 Shade U the edge over other competitors.
Our large factory space is constantly expanding and now allows us to manufacture shade sails and shade structures in much larger quantities. We employ a number of trained operators of stitching and high frequency welding machinery.
It is also the base for much of our heavy duty installation equipment.
From our offices we work on the design and planning of shade structures and co-ordinate our installation teams. Aside from providing shade solutions to Melbourne and the rest of Australia, 1800 Shade U also exports their custom shade sail designs around the world!
